BLESSINGS
© The sound of rain soothes my soul as it patters against the gutters. The warmth upon my throat as I sip some lovely coffee calms me in the midst of my thoughts. The taste of pumpkin bread confirms the promise of rainy fall days, consisting of oversized sweatshirts, soft music, school work, and deep thoughts. My mind runs across fields of glistening corn stalks with the prospect of good books, and newfound knowledge. I think of these tiny blessings in my life and feel an overwhelming sense of gratitude. I am humbled when becoming self-aware of my need for Jesus. Everyday we are given glimpses of His love for us. As we witness the changing leaves from green to the remnants of green adjusting to their new shades of orange, red, and yellow. I too, am constantly adjusting to change within myself and my surroundings. I am aware of a newfound sense of love as I learn to say no to unhealthy habits. I am aware of new prospects as I become immersed in the classes I once contemplated, and I am at awe of nature’s beauty that confirms the importance of change.
“Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.
– 1 Thessalonians 5:18
These moments of uncertainty are hidden opportunities for praise; the praise of upcoming excitement for events we are presently unaware of. Being thankful consists of being faithful when things do not go your way.
“When God gives you a no, give him a thank you. He was protecting you from less than your best.”
That class you signed up for that got cancelled, the college you wanted to go to but could not due to personal reasons, or that boy you thought you could not live without. Count it as a blessing. God was rerouting you towards something special. He felt your heart break in these moments and He knew you were confused when things did not go the way you planned. The good news is that God loves you and He knows your heart. TRUST is so important in moments of confliction. When you trust, you give thanks, and when you give thanks, you feel moments of bliss replacing the confliction. Being grateful is a journey in which so many aspects of your life can be seen as beauty in disguise.
For Jesus replied, “You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand.” – John 3:17
Think of the amazing moments in your life and I bet at least one of these things would not have occurred if you had gotten what you wanted at an earlier time. That new boyfriend? What if you had stayed in the toxic relationship? The new career path? What if you had not taken that class or internship that you once were contemplating.
I hope you feel blessed today and I hope you see goodness in your life. Give praise and the blessings will come. Your realizations of gratitude will be heightened. So beyond comfy sweaters, beautiful car rides, and colorful leaves, take a moment to love the parts of your life that were once moments of heartbreak. I guarantee the acknowledgment of growth that came with past hurt will provide comfort in troubling moments.
“Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.” -Philippians 4:6-7
