© Recently, I was told how important it is to live in the moment. I have trouble doing so and I am using this technique to calm me during times of anxiety.
A few moments ago, there was a cold cup of coffee in my hand, while I looked out the window and saw a set of trees scattered throughout my backyard. The sound of rain pattering gave me comfort and the sight of a lightly snow covered landscape warmed my heart. John Mayer is playing in the background. There was a Himalayan salt lamp in front of me and a binder that entails my reading for the film class I am taking this semester. I admire the yellow highlighter that brightens up the page which covers the important details in the midst of a 1,000 words. The highlighter is bright, focusing on the things that are needed and doing nothing more than that. I aspire to live like that; focusing on the small, yet essential, factors of my life in order to find the peace and bliss I so desperately desire. And, while I acknowledge that peace is found within, as the Lord lives within and provides peace, I still find it necessary to enjoy the moments that emphasize the beauty of this world.
Next time you feel anxious. Focus on the here and now. What do you smell, see, hear, touch and feel? Focus on each and every sense, individually, and feel the tension in your body start to dissipate. Better yet, sometimes the here and now is not always the best. Picture yourself where you want to be, whether it be a memory or an aspiration. Let it inspire you. Let yourself daydream.
Some biblical inspiration:
Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. “Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble. – Matthew 6: 31-34
Peace be with you.
